Katarina Holmberg was born in Helsinki, Finland and is a Swedish speaking Finn. She moved to Brighton in 1987 with her English Mum and was raised between Berlin, Brighton and Helsinki.
When Katarina was 17 she moved to Berlin. While she was there she met a film music composer with whom she has successfully synced two songs to film sound tracks, one film aired in over 30 countries world wide with Sony BMG and Universal Music.
She graduated in June 2006 with a first class honours Music degree from Southampton University. Whilst studying she was a soloist and assistant Musical Director for the University Gospel Choir and a soloist with the Jazz
Orchestra Big Band, SUJO, with whom she sang at the Vienne Jazz Festival In France, 2004.
Katarina lived in this time between Brighton, Southampton and Berlin, working as a stage assistant on several German TV shows before returning to the UK to start her solo project Kiina in 2008. Kiina has had support slots for Incognito, Neneh Cherry, Two Spot Gobi and a request for a Finlay Quaye slot too they have received radio play on Juice FM, Radio Reverb, BBC and ABC. Katarina is currently recording a collection of songs with Al Scott (Asian Dub Foundation, The Levellers, Monty Python).
As a session singer/lead and backing singer she has worked in the UK, Berlin, France, Carribbean and Finland for ITV - backing singing for XFactor on stage '05, '07 and recording in the studio for the Xfactor backing audio '08 and '09 including for Beyonce and Westlife and George Michael.
She has recently sung backing vocals for Michael Ball's 2009 Greatest Hits album and for Andrew Lloyd Webber's single for his new musical Love Never Dies.
She has also sung for BBC (live on TV for Children In Need and for BBC:LIVE), The Discovery Channel, 606 Jazz club (live), Silverstone Races (live), Steve Mac (Rhythm Masters), Buena Vista and The National German
Television Awards.
Katarina has also appeared as a featured vocalist on a hip hop song which was chosen to be on the Rising Styles UK Hip Hop Festival's annual album showcasing new UK talent this summer ('09).
When she isn't performing, writing or recording for Kiina or doing recording sessions Katarina teaches vocal studies from theory through to performance at Solent University, and works with the Arts Council funded, Brighton-based
group, Cultures Club devising music and workshops with children from multiple backgrounds with multiple needs aged 8-17.
In 2007 she set up the function band Grand Avenue Music with UK session guitarist Steve Down who play soul, funk and disco covers across the UK for private parties, weddings and functions.
